AVALLON , a See also:

town of central See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Yonne, 34 M. S.S.E. of See also:Auxerre on a See also:branch of the See also:Paris-See also:Lyon railway. Pop. (rgo6) 5197. The town, with wide streets and picturesque promenades, is finely situated on a promontory, the See also:base of which is washed on the See also:south by the See also:Cousin, on the See also:east and See also:west by small streams. Its See also:chief See also:building, the See also:church of St Lazare, See also:dates from the 12th See also:century. The two western portals are adorned with See also:sculpture in the ornate Romanesque See also:style; the See also:tower on the See also:left of the See also:facade was rebuilt in the 17th century. The Tour de L'Horloge, pierced by a gateway through which passes the Grande See also:Rue, is a 15th century structure containing a museum on its second See also:floor. Remains of the See also:ancient fortifications, including seven of See also:AVEBURY 51 the flanking towers, are still to be seen. Avallon has a statue of See also:Vauban, the military engineer. The public institutions include the subprefecture, a tribunal of first instance, and a communal See also:college. The manufacture of biscuits and gingerbread, and of See also:leather and See also:farm implements is carried on, and there is consider-able See also:traffic in See also:wood, See also:wine, and the live-stock and agricultural produce of the surrounding See also:country.
