AVIENUS, RUFIUS See also:FESTUS , a See also:Roman aristocrat and poet, of Vulsinii in See also:Etruria, who flourished during the second See also:half of the 4th See also:century A.D. He was probably proconsul of See also:Africa (366) and of Achaia (372). Avienus was a See also:pagan and a staunch supporter of the old See also:religion. He translated the cl)acv6peea of See also:Aratus and paraphrased the Hepcir' is of See also:Dionysius under the See also:title of Descriptio Orbis Terrarum, both in hexameters. He also compiled a description, in See also:iambic trimeters, of the coasts of the Mediterranean, See also:Caspian and See also:Black Seas in several books, of which only a fragment of the first is extant. He also epitomized See also:Livy and See also:Virgil's Aeneid in the same See also:metre, but these See also:works are lost. Some See also:minor poems are found under his name in anthologies, e.g. a humorous See also:request to one Favianus for some pomegranates for medicinal purposes.
