BARBERINI , the name of a powerful See also:

Italian See also:family, originally of Tuscan extraction, who settled in See also:Florence during the See also:early See also:part of the 1th See also:century. They acquired See also:great See also:wealth and See also:influence, and in 1623 Maffeo Barberini was raised to the papal See also:throne as See also:Urban VIII. He made his See also:brother, See also:Antonio, a distinguished soldier, and two nephews, cardinals, and gave to a third See also:nephew, Taddeo, the principality of See also:Palestrina. Great See also:jealousy of their increasing See also:power was excited amongst the neighbouring princes, and Odoardo See also:Farnese, See also:duke of See also:Parma,made See also:war upon Taddeo, and defeated the papal troops. After the See also:death of Urban in 1644 his successor, See also:Innocent X., showed hostility to the Barberini family. Taddeo fled to See also:Paris, where he died in 1647, and with him the family became See also:extinct in the male See also:line. His daughter See also:Cornelia married See also:Prince Giulio Cesare See also:Colonna di Sciarra in 1728, who added her name to his own. On the death of Prince Enrico Barberini-Colonna the name went to his daughter and heiress Donna Maria and her See also:husband See also:Marquis See also:Luigi See also:Sacchetti, who received the See also:title of prince of Palestrina and permission to See also:bear the name of Barberini. The See also:fine Barberini See also:palace and library in See also:Rome give See also:evidence of their wealth and magnificence. The ruthless way in which they plundered See also:ancient buildings to adorn their own palaces is the origin of the saying, " Quod non fecerunt barbari, fecerunt Barberini."
