BARRIER TREATY , the name given first to the treaty signed on 29th of See also:

October 1709 between See also:Great See also:Britain and the states-See also:general of the See also:United See also:Netherlands, by which the latter engaged to See also:guarantee the See also:Protestant See also:succession in See also:England in favour of the See also:house of See also:Hanover; while Great Britain undertook to procure for the Dutch an adequate barrier on the See also:side of the Netherlands, consisting of the towns of See also:Furnes, See also:Nieuport, See also:Ypres, See also:Menin, See also:Lille, See also:Tournai, See also:Conde, See also:Valenciennes, See also:Maubeuge, See also:Charleroi, See also:Namur, See also:Halle, See also:Damme, Dendermond and the citadel of See also:Ghent. The treaty was based on the same principle of securing See also:Holland against See also:French aggression that had inspired that of See also:Ryswick in 1698, by the terms of which the See also:chief frontier fortresses of the Netherlands were to be garrisoned by Dutch troops. A second Barrier Treaty was signed between Great Britain and Holland on 29th of See also:January 1713, by which the strong places designed for the barrier were reduced to Furnes, the fort of Knocke, Ypres, Menin, Tournai, See also:Mons, Charleroi and the citadel of Ghent, and certain fortresses in the neighbourhood of that See also:city and of See also:Bruges; Great Britain undertaking to obtain the right for the Dutch to See also:garrison them from the future See also:sovereign of the See also:Spanish Netherlands. Itsterns were included in the treaty of See also:Rastatt, between the See also:emperor and See also:France, signed on the 7th of See also:March 1714. A third Barrier Treaty was signed in See also:November 1715. See See also:Jean See also:Dumont, See also:Corps universel diplomatique, &c. (1726-1731), vol. See also:sill.
