His See also:father, a retired See also:judge, destined him for the legal profession, but the boy's tastes pointed definitely in another direction. Even at school he was remarked for his wonderful skill in See also:drawing and See also:painting, and in 1812 he was permitted to visit See also:Paris in See also:order to perfect himself in his See also:art. He studied for eighteen months in the atelier of See also:Gros and then began to See also:work independently. In 1814 his copy of the Madonna della Sedia was bought by the See also:king of See also:Prussia, who was attracted by the See also:young artist and did much to advance him. He was engaged to paint several large Biblical pictures, and in 1825, after his return from See also:Italy, continued to produce paintings which were placed in the churches of See also:Berlin and See also:Potsdam. Some of these were historical pieces, but the See also:majority were representations of Scriptural incidents. Begas was also celebrated as a portrait-painter, and supplied to the royal See also:gallery a See also:long See also:series of portraits of eminent Prussian men of letters. At his See also:death he held the See also:post of See also:court painter at Berlin. His son OSKAR (1828-1883) was also a painter and See also:professor of painting at Berlin. See also:REINHOLD, the sculptor, is noticed below.
