BELUGA (Delphinapterus leucas) , also called the " See also:white See also:whale," a cetacean of the See also:family Delphinidae, characterized by its rounded See also:head and uniformly See also:light See also:colour. A native of the See also:Arctic seas, it extends in the western See also:Atlantic as far See also:south as the See also:river St See also:Lawrence, which it ascends for a considerable distance. In colour it is almost pure white; the maximum length is about twelve feet; and the back-fin is replaced by a See also:low See also:ridge. Examples have been taken on the See also:British coasts; and individuals have been kept for some See also:time in captivity in See also:America and in See also:London. See See also:CETACEA.
