Ignorant of the fact that this See also:union was a lawful one, Ernest urged his son to marry, and reproached him with his connexion with Agnes. Albert then declared she was his lawful wife; and subsequently, during his See also:absence, she was seized by See also:order of Duke Ernest and condemned to See also:death for See also:witchcraft. On the 12th of See also:October 1435 she was drowned in the See also:Danube near See also:Straubing, in which See also:town her remains were afterwards buried by Albert. This See also:story lived See also:long in the memory of the See also:people, and its See also:chief See also:interest lies in its See also:literary associations. It has afforded material for several dramas, and Adolf B6ttger, See also:Friedrich Ilcbbcl and See also:Otto See also:Ludwig have each written one entitled Agnes Bernauer.
