BILBEIS, or BELBES , a See also:town of See also:lower See also:Egypt, on the eastern See also:arm of the See also:Nile, 36 m. N.N.E. of See also:Cairo by See also:rail. Pop. (1907) 13,485. The Coptic name, Phelbes, seems to have been derived from See also:Egyptian, but nothing is known of the See also:place before See also:medieval times. Considered the See also:bulwark of the See also:kingdom on that See also:side, Bilbeis was by the Moslems defended with strong fortifications. In 1163–1164 it was besieged for three months by the crusaders under See also:Amalric, and in 1168 was captured and pillaged by another See also:army of crusaders. See also:Napoleon in 1798 ordered the restoration of the fortifications, but they have again fallen into decay. Bilbeis was the first halting-place of the See also:English See also:cavalry in their See also:march on Cairo after the fight at Tel-el-Kebir on the 13th of See also:September 1882.
