CASLON , the name of a famous See also:

See also:William Caslon (1692-1766), the first of the name, was See also:born at Cradley, See also:Worcestershire, and in 1716 started business in See also:London as an engraver of See also:gun locks and barrels, and as a bookbinder's See also:tool-cutter. Being thus brought into contact with printers, he was induced to See also:fit up a type foundry, largely through the encouragement of William See also:Bowyer. The distinction and legibility of his type secured him the patronage of the leading printers of the See also:day in See also:England and on the See also:continent. The use of Caslon types, discontinued about the beginning of the 19th See also:century, was revived about 1845 at the See also:suggestion of See also:Sir See also:Henry See also:Cole, and used for See also:printing the See also:Diary of See also:Lady See also:Willoughby (a pseudo-17th-century See also:story) by the See also:Chiswick See also:Press. The See also:head-See also:line on this See also:page is " Caslon Old See also:Face." He died on the 23rd of See also:January 1766. His son, William Caslon (1720-1778), who had been partner with his See also:father for some years, continued the business.
