city and the See also:county-seat of Appanoose county, See also:Iowa, U.S.A., in the See also:south See also:part of the See also:state, about 90 M. N.W. of See also:Keokuk. Pop. (189o) 3668; (1900) 5256; (1905, state See also:census) 5967 (487 being See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o) 6936. Centerville is served by the See also:Chicago, See also:Burlington & See also:Quincy, the Chicago, See also:Rock See also:Island & Pacific and the Iowa Central See also:railways. Among the See also:principal buildings are the county See also:court-See also:house and the Federal See also:building, and the city has a public library and a See also:hospital. It is in one of the most productive See also:coal regions of the state; it See also:ships coal, See also:limestone and livestock, has large bottling See also:works, and manufactures See also:iron, See also:brick and See also:tile, See also:machine-See also:shop products, woollen goods, shirts, cigars and See also:flour. The See also:place was platted in 1846, was called Chaldea until 1849, when the See also:present name was adopted, was incorporated as a See also:town in 1855, and in 187o was chartered as a city of the second class. The city limits were extended in 1906—1907.
