COELLO, ALONSO See also:SANCHEZ (1515-1590) , See also:Spanish painter, according to some authorities a native of See also:Portugal, was See also:born, according to others, at Benifacio, near the See also:city of See also:Valencia. He studied many years in See also:Italy; and returning to See also:Spain in 1541 he settled at See also:Madrid, and worked on religious themes for most of the palaces and larger churches. He was a follower of See also:Titian, and, like him, excelled in portraits and single figures, elaborating the textures of his armours, draperies, and such accessories in a manner so masterly as strongly to See also:influence See also:Velazquez in his treatment of like See also:objects. Many of his pictures were destroyed in the fires that consumed the Madrid and Prado palaces, but many See also:good examples are yet extant, among which may be noted the portraits of the infantes See also:Carlos and See also:Isabella, now in the Madrid See also:gallery, and the St See also:Sebastian painted in the See also:church of See also:San Ger6nimo, also in Madrid. Coello See also:left a daughter, Isabella Sanchez, who studied under him, and painted excellent portraits.
