It is about 7 M. See also:long and 3 broad at its widest See also:part. The strait between the island and the mainland forms a See also:fine natural See also:harbour, See also:land-locked with narrow entrances, and a See also:depth of about 40 ft. at See also:low See also:tide, and thus capable of accommodating large vessels. At its See also:north end is the Valencia Harbour station on a See also:branch of the See also:Great Southern & Western railway, with a See also:ferry across the strait to Knightstown, the See also:town on the island. The harbour is sometimes visited by warships, and is extensively used by fishing vessels, for which it is the See also:head-quarters of a See also:district. At Knightstown are the buildings of the Anglo-See also:American See also:Telegraph See also:Company, for it was from Valencia, after several unsuccessful attempts from 1857 onward, that the steamer " Great Eastern " first succeeded in laying the See also:cable to See also:Newfoundland in 1866. There are four cables across the See also:Atlantic and one to See also:Emden in See also:Germany. On the island are See also:Protestant and See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, constabulary See also:barracks and a See also:coastguard station. The meteorological reports received by the central See also:office in See also:London from Valencia are of high importance as giving the first indication from any station in the See also:United See also:Kingdom of See also:weather influences from the Atlantic. Valencia formerly exported See also:slate of fine quality. Its cliff scenery is magnificent, and its luxuriant semi-tropical vegetation remarkable. Its name is of See also:Spanish origin; the Irish originally called it Dairbhre, or Darrery, the See also:oak See also:forest.
