COLDWATER , a See also:

city and See also:county-seat of See also:Branch county, See also:Michigan, U.S.A., on Coldwater Stream (which connects two of the See also:group of small lakes in the vicinity), about 8o m. S.S.E. of See also:Grand Rapids. Pop. (189o) 5247; (1900) 6216, of whom 431 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1904) 6225; (1910) 5945. It is served by the See also:Lake See also:Shore & Michigan See also:Southern railway. It is the seat of a See also:state public school and temporary See also:home (opened in 1874) for dependent, neglected or See also:ill-treated See also:children, who are received at any See also:age under twelve. The city is situated in a See also:fine farming region, has an important flouring and grist See also:mill See also:industry, and also manufactures See also:Portland See also:cement, liniment, See also:lumber, See also:furniture, sashes, doors and blinds, See also:brass castings, sleighs, shoes, &c. The See also:municipality owns and operates the See also:water-See also:works and electric See also:lighting plant. Coldwater was settled in 1829, was laid out as a See also:town under the name of See also:Lyons in 1832, received its See also:present name in the following See also:year, was incorporated as a See also:village in 1837, was reached by railway and became the county-seat in 1851, and was chartered as a city in 186r.
