DALRIADA , the name of two See also:

ancient Gaelic kingdoms, one in See also:Ireland and the other in See also:Scotland. The name means the See also:home of the descendants of Riada. Irish Dalriada was the See also:district which now forms the See also:northern See also:part of See also:county See also:Antrim, and from which about A.D. 500 some emigrants crossed over to Scotland, and founded in See also:Argyllshire the Scottish See also:kingdom of Dalriada. Fora See also:time Scottish Dalriada appears to have been dependent upon Irish Dalriada, but about 575 See also:King See also:Aidan secured its See also:independence. One of Aidan's successors, See also:Kenneth, became king of the Picts about 843, and gradually the name Dalriada both in Ireland and Scotland See also:fell into disuse, See W. F. See also:Skene, See also:Celtic Scotland (See also:Edinburgh, 1876-188o).
