market-See also:town in the See also:west of the See also:county Antrim, See also:Ireland, in the See also:south See also:parliamentary See also:division, on the See also:banks of the Six-Mile See also:Water, See also:half a mile from Lough See also:Neagh, in a beautiful and fertile valley. Pop. (19o1) 1826. It is 21; M. See also:north-west of See also:Belfast by the See also:Northern Counties (Midland) railway, and is also the See also:terminus of a See also:branch of the See also:Great Northern railway from See also:Lisburn. There is nothing in the town specially worthy of See also:notice, but the environs, including See also:Shane's See also:Castle and Antrim Castle, possess features of considerable See also:interest. About a mile from the town is one of the most perfect of the See also:round towers of Ireland, 93 ft. high and 50 in circumference at the See also:base. It stands in the grounds of See also:Steeple, a neighbouring seat, where is also the " Witches' See also:Stone," a prehistoric See also:monument. A See also:battle was fought near Antrim between the See also:English and Irish in the See also:ANTWERP reign of See also:Edward III.; and in 1642 a See also:naval engagement took See also:place on Lough Neagh, for See also:Viscount See also:Massereene and Ferrard (who founded Antrim Castle in 1662) had a right to maintain a fighting See also:fleet on the lough. On the 7th of See also:June 1798 there was a See also:smart See also:action in the town between the See also:king's troops and a large See also:body of rebels, in which the latter were defeated, and See also:Lord O'See also:Neill mortally wounded. Before the See also:Union Antrim returned two members to See also:parliament by virtue of letters patent granted in 1666 by See also:Charles II. There are manufactures of See also:paper, See also:linen, and woollen See also:cloth. The See also:government is in the hands of town commissioners.
