James Skene (1775–1864), of Rubislaw, near See also:Aberdeen, and was See also:born on the 7th of See also:June 1809. He was educated at See also:Edinburgh High School, in See also:Germany and at the university of St See also:Andrews, taking an especial See also:interest in the study of See also:Celtic See also:philology and literature. In 1832 he became a writer to the signet, and shortly afterwards obtained an See also:official See also:appointment in the See also:bill See also:department of the See also:Court of Session, which he held until '865. His See also:early interest in the See also:history and antiquities of the Scottish See also:Highlands See also:bore its first See also:fruit in 1837, when he published The Highlanders of See also:Scotland, their Origin, History and Antiquities_ His See also:chief See also:work,however, is his Celtic Scotland, a History of See also:Ancient See also:Alban (3 vols., Edinburgh, '876–188o), perhaps the most important contribution to Scottish history written during the 19th See also:century. In 1879 he was made a D.C.L. of See also:- OXFORD
