When a boy of fourteen he had already acquired a remarkable knowledge of See also:chemistry. This subject he studied at the university of See also:Edinburgh; and he was still See also:young when he was appointed See also:superintendent of the See also:mining and metallurgical See also:works at Espedal in See also:Norway. Subsequently he became a partner in the See also:firm of See also:Evans & Askin, See also:nickel-smelters, of See also:Birmingham, and in that capacity during the years 1.857-186o he visited See also:Chile, See also:Bolivia and See also:Peru. Besides reports for the See also:Iron and See also:Steel See also:Institute, of which, during the last years of his See also:life, he was See also:foreign secretary, he wrote upwards of 5o papers on scientific subjects, among which are the following: " The See also:Action of Sulphurets on Metallic Silicates at High Temperatures," See also:Rep. Mag., 1865; " Researches in British Mineralogy," Phil. Mag., 1867-1868. His observations on the geology of South See also:America were given in a masterly See also:essay, and these and subsequent researches threw much See also:light on igneous and metamorphic phenomena and on the resulting changes in See also:rock-formations. He also contributed important articles on chemical geology to the Chemical See also:News and See also:Geological See also:Magazine (1867 and 1868). In See also:England he was a See also:pioneer in microscopic See also:petrology. He was elected F.R.S. in 1858. He died in See also:London on the 5th of See also:December 1876. See Obituary by P. M.
