It is situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river Tarcza, an affluent of the See also:Theiss, and has been almost completely rebuilt since a See also:great See also:fire in 1887. Eperjes is one of the See also:oldest towns of Hungary, and is still partly surrounded by its old walls. It is the seat of a See also:Greek-See also:Catholic See also:bishop, and possesses a beautiful See also:cathedral built in the 18th See also:century in See also:late See also:Gothic See also:style. It possesses manufactures of See also:cloth, table-See also:linen and earthenware, and has an active See also:trade in See also:wine, linen, See also:cattle and See also:grain. About 2 M. to the See also:south is S6var with important See also:salt-See also:works.

hall, dating from the 15th century, and containing very valuable archives. In its neighbourhood, surrounded by See also:pine forests, are the See also:baths of Bartfa, with twelve See also:mineral springs—iodate, ferruginous and alkaline—used for bathing and drinking.
About 6 m. N.W. of Eperjes is situated the See also:village of Vorosvagas, which contains the only See also:opal mine in See also:Europe. The opal was See also:mined here 800 years ago, and the largest piece hitherto found, weighing 2940 carats and estimated to have a value of £175,000, is preserved in the See also:Court Museum at See also:Vienna.
Eperjes was founded about the See also:middle of the 12th century by a See also:German See also:colony, and was elevated to the See also:rank of a royal See also:free town in 1347 by See also:- LOUIS

During the 16th and the 17th centuries its German educational establishments enjoyed a wide reputation.
