In 1839 on Liebig's recommendation he was appointed to the See also:chair of See also:chemistry in the See also:polytechnic at See also:Stuttgart, and held it till within three years of his See also:death, which happened at Stuttgart on the 1st of See also:July 1885. His earlier See also:work included an investigation of succinic See also:acid, and the preparation of phenyl See also:cyanide (benzonitrile), the simplest nitrile of the aromatic See also:series; but later his See also:time was mainly occupied with questions of technology and public See also:health rather than with pure chemistry. Among the See also:analytical methods worked up by him the best known is that for the estimation of sugars by Fehling's See also:solution," which consists of a solution of cupric sulphate mixed with See also:alkali and See also:potassium-See also:sodium tartrate (Rochelle See also:salt). He was a contributor to the Handworterbuch of Liebig, See also:Wohler and See also:Poggendorff, and to the See also:Graham-See also:Otto Textbook of Chemistry, and for many years was a member of the See also:committee of revision of the See also:Pharmacopoeia Germanica.
