FOUSSA , or FossA, the native name of Cryptoprocta ferox, a somewhat See also:

cat-like or See also:civet-like mammal See also:peculiar to See also:Madagascar, where it is the largest carnivorous See also:animal. It is about twice the See also:size of a cat (5 ft. from See also:nose to end of tail), with See also:short See also:close See also:fur of nearly See also:uniform See also:pale See also:brown. Little is known of its habits, except that it is nocturnal, frequently attacks and carries off goats, and especially kids, and shows See also:great ferocity when wounded, on which See also:account it is much dreaded by the natives. An example lived in the See also:London zoological gardens for nearly fourteen years. See See also:CARNIVORA.
