GIVET , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Ardennes, 40 M. N. by E. of See also:Mezieres on the Eastern railway between the town and See also:Namur. Pop. (1906) town, 5110; See also:commune, 7468. Givet lies on the See also:Meuse about 1 m. from the Belgian frontier, and was formerly a fortress of considerable importance. It is divided into three portions--the citadel called See also:Charlemont and See also:Grand Givet on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river, and on the opposite bank See also:Petit Givet, connected with Grand Givet by a See also:stone See also:bridge of five See also:arches. The fortress of Charlemont, situated at the See also:top of a precipitous See also:rock 705 ft. high, was rounded by the See also:emperor See also:Charles V. in the 16th See also:century, and further fortified by See also:Vauban at the end of the 17th century; it is the only survival of the fortifications of the town, the See also:rest of which were destroyed in 1892. In Grand Givet there are a See also:church and a town-See also:hall built by Vauban, and a statue of the composer See also:Etienne See also:Mehul stands in the See also:fine square named after him. Petit Givet, the See also:industrial See also:quarter, is traversed by a small tributary of the Meuse, the Houille, which is bordered by tanneries and See also:glue factories. Pencils and See also:tobacco-pipes are also manufactured. The town has considerable river See also:traffic, consisting chiefly of See also:coal, See also:copper and stone. There is a chamber of arts and manufactures.
