He became See also:chaplain to See also:Cardinal See also:Pole and lived with him at See also:Rome, was attainted in 1539, but returned to See also:England on See also:Mary's See also:accession, and in 1555 became See also:bishop of St See also:Asaph, a See also:diocese which he did much to win back to the old faith. On the See also:death of Mary, Goldwell escaped from England and in 1561 became See also:superior of the Theatines at See also:Naples. He was the only English bishop at the See also:council of See also:Trent, and in 1562 was again attainted. In the following See also:year he was appointed vicar-See also:general to Carlo See also:Borromeo, See also:archbishop of See also:Milan. He died in Rome in 1585, the last of the English bishops who had refused to accept the See also:Reformation.
