GOLDZIHER, IGNAZ (1850– ) , Jewish Hungarian orientalist, was See also:born in Stuhlweissenburg on the 22nd of See also:June 185o. He was educated at the See also:universities of See also:Budapest, See also:Berlin, See also:Leipzig and See also:Leiden, and became privat docent at Budapest in 1872. In the next See also:year, under the auspices of the Hungarian See also:government, he began a See also:journey through See also:Syria, See also:Palestine and See also:Egypt, and took the opportunity of attending lectures of See also:Mahommedan sheiks in the See also:mosque of el-Azhar in See also:Cairo. He was the first Jewish See also:scholar to become See also:professor in the Budapest University (1894), and represented the Hungarian government and the See also:Academy of Sciences at numerous See also:international congresses. He received the large See also:gold See also:medal at the See also:Stockholm See also:Oriental See also:Congress in 1889. He became a member of several Hungarian and other learned See also:societies, was appointed secretary of the Jewish community in Budapest. He was made Litt. D. of See also:Cambridge(19o4)and LL.D. of See also:Aberdeen (1906). His See also:eminence in the See also:sphere of scholarship is due primarily to his careful investigationofpre-Mah'ommedan andMahommedanlaw,tradition, See also:religion and See also:poetry, in connexion with which he published a large number of See also:treatises, See also:review articles and essays contributed to the collections of the Hungarian Academy.
