GREYMOUTH , a seaport of New See also:

Zealand, the See also:principal See also:port on the See also:west See also:coast of See also:South See also:Island, in See also:Grey See also:county. Pop. (1906) 4569. It stands on the small See also:estuary of the Grey or Mawhera See also:river, has a See also:good See also:harbour, and railway communication with Hokitika, Reefton, &c., while the construction of a See also:line to connect with See also:Christchurch and See also:Nelson was begun in 1887. The See also:district is both auriferous and See also:coal-bearing. See also:Gold-dredging is a See also:rich See also:industry, and the coal-mines have attendant See also:industries in See also:coke,-bricks and See also:fire-See also:clay. The See also:timber See also:trade is also well See also:developed. The neighbouring scenery is picturesque, especially among the hills surrounding See also:Lake See also:Brunner (15 M. S.E.).
