NELSON , a seaport of New See also:

Zealand, the seat of a See also:bishop and See also:capital of a provincial See also:district of the same name; at the See also:head of See also:Blind See also:Bay on the See also:northern See also:coast of the See also:South See also:Island. Pop. (1906) 8164. The See also:woods and See also:fields in the neighbourhood abound with See also:English See also:song-birds, and the streams are stocked with See also:trout; while the orchards in the See also:town and suburbs are famous for English kinds of See also:fruit, and hops are extensively cultivated. The town possesses a small museum and See also:art See also:gallery, See also:literary See also:institute, See also:government buildings, and boys' and girls' See also:schools of high repute. The See also:cathedral (See also:Christ See also:Church) is finely placed on a See also:mound which was originally intended as a See also:place of See also:refuge from hostile natives. It is built of See also:wood, the various native timbers being hap 'ily combined. See also:Railways connect the See also:harbour with the town, and the town with Motupiko, &c. The harbour, with extensive wharves, is protected by the See also:long and remarkable See also:Boulder See also:Bank, whose See also:southern portion forms the natural See also:breakwater to that anchorage.
