He graduated from the university of Copenhagen in 1865, began the study of See also:law, removed to the See also:United States in 1867, taught See also:German in See also:Milwaukee, was admitted to the See also:bar in 1869, and practised in See also:Chicago. He became a writer and lecturer on See also:socialism and was closely connected with the See also:work of the Socialist Labor party from 1874 to 1884, then devoted himself almost exclusively to lecturing until his See also:appointment to a See also:post in the See also:bureau of labour See also:statistics. He again returned to the lecture See also:field, and was an editorial writer for the New See also:York and Chicago American from 1898 until his See also:death in New York See also:City on the 15th of See also:October 1899.
