HANSI , a See also:

town of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Hissar See also:district of the See also:Punjab, on a See also:branch of the Western See also:Jumna See also:canal, with a station on the See also:Rewari-Ferozepore railway, 16 m. E. of Hissar. Pop. (1901) 16,523. Hansi is one of the most See also:ancient towns in See also:northern India, the former See also:capital of the See also:tract called See also:Hariana. At the end of the r8th See also:century it was the headquarters of the famous Irish adventurer See also:George See also:Thomas; from 1803 to 1857 it was a British See also:cantonment, and it became the See also:scene of a murderous outbreak during the See also:Mutiny. A ruined fort overlooks the town, which is still surrounded by a high See also:brick See also:wall, with bastions and See also:loop holes. It is a centre of See also:local See also:trade, with factories for ginning and pressing See also:cotton.
