town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hesse-See also:Nassau on the See also:Main, 6 m. by See also:rail W. of See also:Frankfort-on-Main. Pop. (1905) 14,121. It is a busy See also:industrial town with large dye-See also:works and manufactures of machinery, See also:snuff, See also:tobacco, waxcloth, gelatine, See also:furniture and biscuits. See also:Brewing is carriedon and there is a considerable See also:river See also:trade. The See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:church of St Justinus is a See also:fine See also:basilica originally built in the gth See also:century; it has been restored several times, and a See also:Gothic See also:choir was added in the 15th century. The town has also an Evangelical church and a See also:synagogue, and a statue of See also:Bismarck by Alois See also:Mayer. Hochst belonged formerly to the See also:electors of See also:Mainz who had a See also:palace here; this was destroyed in 1634 with the exception of one fine See also:tower which still remains. In 1622 See also:Christian, See also:duke of See also:Brunswick, was defeated here by See also:Count See also:Tilly, and in 1795 the Austrians gained a victory here over the See also:French. Hochst is also the name of a small town in Hesse. This has some manufactures, and was formerly the seat of a See also:Benedictine monastery.
