HODEDA (Hodeida, Hadeda) , a See also:town in See also:Arabia situated on the Red See also:Sea See also:coast 14° 48' N. and 42° 57' E. It lies on a See also:beach of muddy See also:sand exposed to the southerly and See also:westerly winds. Steamers See also:anchor more than a mile from See also:shore, and merchandize has to be transhipped by means of sambuks or native boats. But Hodeda has become the See also:chief centre of the maritime See also:trade of See also:Turkish See also:Yemen, and has superseded See also:Mokha as the See also:great See also:port of export of See also:South Arabian See also:coffee. The town is composed of See also:stone-built houses of several storeys, and is surrounded, except on the sea See also:face, by a fortified See also:enceinte. The See also:population is estimated at 33,000, and contains, besides the Arab inhabitants and the Turkish officials and See also:garrison, a considerable See also:foreign See also:element, Greeks, See also:Indians and See also:African traders from the opposite coast. There are consulates of Great See also:Britain, See also:United States, See also:France, See also:Germany, See also:Italy and See also:Greece. The See also:steam See also:tonnage entering and clearing the port in 1904 amounted to 78,700 tons, the highest hitherto recorded. See also:Regular services are maintained with See also:Aden, and with See also:Suez, Massowa and the other Red Sea ports. Large dhows bring See also:dates from the See also:Persian Gulf, and occasional steamers from Bombay See also:call on their way to See also:Jidda with cargoes of See also:grain. The imports for 1904 amounted in value to £467,000, the chief items being piece goods, See also:food grains and See also:sugar; the exports amounted to £451,000, including coffee valued at £229,000.
