HOVA , the name originally applied to the See also:

middle-class Malayo-See also:Indonesian natives of See also:Madagascar (q.v.), as distinct from the See also:noble class Andriane and the slave class Andcvo. Hova has now come to mean the most numerous and powerful of the tribes which See also:form the native See also:population of Madagascar. The Hova, who occupy the See also:province of Imerina, the central See also:plateau of the See also:island, are of Malayo-Indonesian origin. The See also:period at which the Hova arrived in Madagascar is still a subject of dispute. Some think that the See also:immigration took See also:place in very See also:early times, before See also:Hinduism reached the See also:Malay See also:Archipelago, since no trace of See also:Sanskrit is found in Malagasy. Others believe that the Hova did not reach the island until the 12th or r3th See also:century. At the See also:French See also:conquest of Madagascar (1895), the Hova were the most powerful and, politically, the dominant See also:people; but were far from having subjected the whole of the island to their See also:rule. The Hova are See also:short and slim, with a complexion of a yellowish See also:olive, many being fairer than the See also:average of See also:southern Europeans. Their See also:hair is See also:long, See also:black and smooth but coarse. Their heads Much See also:rice is cultivated in the vicinity of See also:Houston by See also:Japanese farmers.are See also:round, with See also:flat straight foreheads, flat faces, prominent cheekbones, small straight noses, fairly wide nostrils, and small black and slightly oblique eyes. The See also:physical contrast to the See also:negro is usually very obvious, but, especially among the See also:lower classes, there is a tendency to thick lips, kinky hair and dark skin. In many of their customs, such as See also:taboo, See also:infanticide, See also:marriage and funeral See also:rites, they show their Indonesian origin.
