JALPAIGURI, or JULPIGOREE , a See also:town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Rajshahi See also:division of Eastern See also:Bengal and See also:Assam. The town is on the right See also:bank of the See also:river See also:Tista, with a station on the Eastern Bengal railway about 300 M. due N. of See also:Calcutta. Pop. (1901), 9708. It is the headquarters of the See also:commissioner of the division. The DISTRICT OF JALPAIGURI (organized in 1869) occupies an irregularly shaped See also:tract See also:south of See also:Darjeeling and See also:Bhutan and See also:north of the See also:state of Kuch See also:Behar. It includes the Western See also:Dwars, annexed from Bhutan after the See also:war of 1864-1865. See also:Area, 2,962 sq. m. Pop. (1901), 787,380, an increase of 16% in the See also:decade. The district is divided into a " regulation " tract, lying towards the south-See also:west, and a See also:strip of See also:country, about 22 M. in width, See also:running along the See also:foot of the Himalayas,, and known as the Western Dwars. The former is a continuous expanse of level paddy See also:fields, only broken by groves of bamboos, palms, and See also:fruit-trees.

The frontier towards Bhutan is formed by the Sinchula See also:

mountain range, some peaks of which attain an See also:elevation of 6000 ft. It is thickly wooded from See also:base to See also:summit. The See also:principal See also:rivers, proceeding from west to See also:east, are the Mahananda, Karatoya, Tista, Jaldhaka, Duduya, Mujnai, Tursa, Kaljani, Raidak, and Sankos. The most important is the Tista, which forms a valuable means of See also:water communication. See also:Lime is quarried in the See also:lower Bhutan hills. The Western Dwars are the principal centre of See also:tea cultivation in Eastern Bengal. The other portion of the district produces jute. Jalpaiguri is traversed by the See also:main See also:line of the Eastern Bengal railway to Darjeeling. It is also served by the Bengal Dwars railway.
