KESWICK , a See also:

market See also:town in the See also:Penrith See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Cumberland, See also:England, served by the See also:joint See also:line of the See also:Cockermouth Keswick & Penrith, and See also:London & See also:North-Western See also:railways. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901), 4451. It lies in the See also:northern See also:part of the See also:Lake District, in an open valley on the See also:banks of the See also:river Greta, with the See also:mountain of Skiddaw to the north and the lovely lake of See also:Derwentwater to the See also:south. It is much frequented by visitors as a centre for this famous district —for boating on Derwentwater and for the easy ascent of Skiddaw. Many residences are seen in the neighbourhood, and the town as a whole is See also:modern. Fitz See also:Park, opened in 1887, is a pleasant recreation ground. The town-See also:hall contains a museum of See also:local See also:geology, natural See also:history, &c. In the See also:parish See also:church of Crosthwaite, m. distant, there is a See also:monument to the poet See also:Southey. His See also:residence, Greta Hall, stands at the end of the See also:main See also:street, See also:close by the river. Keswick is noted for its manufacture of See also:lead pencils; and the See also:plumbago (locally See also:wad) used to be supplied from mines in Borrowdale. See also:Char, caught in the neighbouring lakes, are potted at Keswick in large quantities and exported.
