KITTUR , a See also:

village of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Belgaum See also:district of Bombay; pop. (1901), 4922. It contains a ruined fort, formerly the See also:residence of a Mahratta See also:chief. In connexion with a disputed See also:succession to this chiefship in 1824, St See also:John See also:Thackeray, an See also:uncle of the novelist, was killed when approaching the fort under a See also:flag of truce; and a See also:nephew of See also:Sir See also:Thomas See also:Munro, See also:governor of See also:Madras, See also:fell subsequently when the fort was stormed.
