KITTO, See also:JOHN (1804–1854) , See also:English biblical See also:scholar, was the son of a See also:mason at See also:Plymouth, where he was See also:born on the 4th of See also:December 1804. An See also:accident brought on deafness, and in See also:November 1819 he was sent to the workhouse, where he was employed in making See also:list shoes. In 1823 a fund was raised on his behalf, and he was sent to See also:board with the clerk of the guardians, having his See also:time at his own disposal, and the See also:privilege of making use of a public library. After preparing a small See also:volume of miscellanies, which was published by subscription, he studied See also:dentistry with See also:Anthony See also:Norris Groves in See also:Exeter. In 1825 he obtained congenial employment in the See also:printing See also:office of the See also:Church Missionary Society at See also:Islington, and in 1827 was trans- ferred to the same society's See also:establishment at See also:Malta. There he remained for eighteen months, but shortly after his return to See also:England he accompanied Groves and other See also:friends on a private missionary enterprise to See also:Bagdad, where he obtained See also:personal knowledge of See also:Oriental See also:life and habits which he afterwards applied with tact and skill in the See also:illustration of biblical scenes and incidents. See also:Plague See also:broke out, the missionary establishment was broken up, and in 1832 Kitto returned to England. On arriving in See also:London he was engaged in the preparation of various serial publications of the Society for the See also:Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, the most important of which were the Pictorial See also:History of See also:Palestine and the Pictorial See also:Bible. The Cyclopaedia of Biblical Literature, 15 edited under his superintendence, appeared in two volumes in 1843-1845 and passed through three See also:editions. His Daily Bible Illustrations (8 vols. 1849-1853) received an appreciation which is not yet See also:extinct. In 185o he received an See also:annuity of £roo from the See also:civil list.

August 1854 he went to See also:Germany for the See also:waters of See also:Cannstatt on the See also:Neckar, where on the 25th of November he died.
