For some years he led a business See also:life, but was always studying See also:music; and in 1827, as the result of his See also:work in forming the collection of See also:church music published in 1821 at See also:Boston by the See also:Handel and See also:Haydn Society, he moved to Boston and there first became See also:president of the society and then founder of the Boston See also:Academy of Music (1832). He published some successful educational books, and was a See also:pioneer of musical instruction in the public See also:schools, adopted in 1838. He received the degree of See also:doctor of music from New See also:York University in 1855. He died at See also:Orange, New See also:Jersey, on the rrth of See also:August 1872. His son See also:William Mason (1829—1908), an accomplished pianist and composer, published an interesting See also:volume of reminiscences, See also:Memoirs of a Musical Life, in 1901.
