KOSZEG (Ger. Guns) , a See also:town in the See also:county of Vas, in See also:Hungary, 173 M. W. of See also:Budapest by See also:rail. Pop. (1900), 7422. It is pleasantly situated in the valley of the Guns, and is dominated towards the See also:west by the peaks of Altenhaus (2000 ft.) and of the Geschriebene See also:Stein (2900 ft.). It possesses a See also:castle of See also:Count Esterhazy, a See also:modern See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:Church in See also:Gothic See also:style and two convents. It has important See also:cloth factories and a lively See also:trade in See also:fruit and See also:wine. The town has a See also:special See also:historical See also:interest for the heroic and successful See also:defence of the fortress by See also:Nicolas Jurisics against a large See also:army of See also:Sultan Soliman, in See also:JulySee also:August 1532, which frustrated the advance of the See also:Turks to See also:Vienna for that See also:year. To the See also:south-See also:east of Koszeg, at the confluence of the Guns with the Raab, is situated the town of Sarvar (pop. 3158), formerly fortified, where in 1526 the first See also:printing See also:press in Hungary was established.
