KRISTIANSTAD (CHRISTIANSTAD) , a See also:port of See also:Sweden, See also:chief See also:town of the See also:district (lan) of Kristianstad, on a See also:peninsula in See also:Lake Sjovik, an expansion of the See also:river Helge, to m. from the Baltic. Pop. (1000), 10,318. Its See also:harbour, See also:custom-See also:house, &c., are at Ahus at the mouth of the river. It is among the first twelve manufacturing towns of Sweden as regards value of output, having See also:engineering See also:works, See also:flour-See also:mills, distilleries, See also:weaving mills and See also:sugar factories. See also:Granite and See also:wood-pulp are exported, and See also:coal and See also:grain imported. The town is the seat of the See also:court of See also:appeal for the provinces of Skane and Blekinge. It was foundedand fortified in 1614 by See also:Christian IV. of See also:Denmark, who built the See also:fine ornate See also:church. The town was ceded to Sweden in 1658, retaken by Christian V. in 1676, and again acquired by Sweden in 1678.
