LACHINE , an incorporated See also:

town in Jacques See also:Cartier See also:county, See also:Quebec, See also:Canada, 8 m. W. of See also:Montreal, on See also:Lake St See also:Louis, an expansion of the St See also:Lawrence See also:river, and at the upper end of the Lachine See also:canal. Pop. (1901) 5561. It is a station on the See also:Grand See also:Trunk railway and a See also:port of See also:call for steamers plying between Montreal and the See also:Great Lakes. It is a favourite summer resort for the See also:people of Montreal. It was named in 1669 mockery of its then owner, See also:Robert Cavelier de la Salle (1643-'687), who dreamed of a westward passage to See also:China. In 1689 it was the See also:scene of a terrible See also:massacre of the See also:French by the See also:Iroquois.
