(1814-1873), See also:Canadian statesman, was See also:born in the See also:province of See also:Quebec on the 6th of See also:September 1814. Called to the See also:bar in 1835, he soon gained a large practice. He took See also:part in the See also:rebellion of 1837, and was forced for a See also:time to See also:fly the See also:country. In 1848 he was elected to the Canadian See also:parliament. His youthful ebullition of 1837 was soon repented of, and he became a loyal subject of the See also:British See also:crown. So greatly had he changed that in 1854 he became a leading member of the reconstructed Liberal-Conservative party. In 1855 he was appointed provincial secretary, and in 1857 See also:attorney-See also:general for See also:Lower See also:Canada. From 1858 to 1862 he and Sir See also:John See also:Macdonald were See also:joint See also:prime ministers of Canada, and their See also:alliance lasted till the See also:death of Cartier. He took the See also:chief part in promoting many useful See also:measures, such as the abolition of seigneurial See also:tenure in Lower Canada (see QUEBEC), and the codification of the See also:civil See also:law of that province (1857-1864). Above all he favoured the construction of See also:railways, and to his See also:energy and fearless, optimism are largely due the eventual success of the See also:Grand See also:Trunk railway, and the resolve to construct the Canadian Pacific. In the See also:face of See also:great opposition, he carried his native province into federation (1864-1867), which would have been impossible without his aid.

cabinet of Sir John Macdonald he sat as See also:minister of See also:militia and See also:defence, and carried in 1868 an important See also:act establishing the See also:land forces of Canada on a See also:sound basis.. Though adevout See also:Catholic, he became involved in. a See also:political See also:quarrel with his See also:church, and was defeated by clerical See also:influence at the general See also:election of 1872. Another seat was found for him, but his See also:health failed and he died on the zoth of May 1873. The See also:Life, by See also:Alfred O.'
