He was educated at the gymnasium of See also:Brieg and subsequently studied See also:law. He then entered the service of the See also:duke of Brieg. In 1644 he was made " ducal councillor." He died at See also:Liegnitz on the 24th of See also:July 1655. Logau's epigrams, which appeared in two collections under the See also:pseudonym " Salomon von Golaw " (an See also:anagram of his real name) in 1638 (Erstes Hundert Teutscher Reimensprilche) and 1654 (Deutscher Sinngedichte drei Tausend), show a marvellous range and variety of expression. He had suffered bitterly under the adverse conditions of the See also:time; but his See also:satire is not merely the outcome of See also:personal feeling. In the turbulent See also:age of the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War he was one of the few men who preserved intact his intellectual integrity and judged his contemporaries fairly. He satirized with unsparing See also:hand the See also:court See also:life, the useless bloodshed of the war, the lack of See also:national See also:pride in the German See also:people, and their slavish See also:imitation of the See also:French in customs, See also:dress and speech. He belonged to the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft under the name Der Verkleinernde, and regarded himself as a follower of See also: W. See also:Ramler, who first See also:drew See also:attention to their merits; a second edition appeared in 1791. A See also:critical edition was published by G. Eitner in 1872, who also edited a selection of Logau's epigrams for the Deutsche Dichter See also:des X VII. Jahrhunderts (vol. iii., 187o) ; there is also a selection by H. Oesterley in Kiirschner's Deutsche Nationalliteratur, vol. See also:xxviii. (1885). See H. Denker, Beitrage zur literarischen Wiirdigung Logaus (1889); W.
