LYTTELTON , a See also:

It is surrounded by abrupt hills rising to r600 ft., through which a railway communicates with See also:Christchurch (7 M. N.W.) by a See also:tunnel rt m. See also:long. See also:Great breakwaters protect the See also:harbour, which has an See also:area of r,o acres, with a See also:low-See also:tide See also:depth of 20 to 27 ft. There is a graving See also:dock accessible for vessels of 6000 tons. The produce of the See also:rich agricultural See also:district of See also:Canterbury is exported, frozen or preserved. Lyttelton, formerly called Port See also:Cooper and Port See also:Victoria, was the See also:original See also:settlement in this district (185o).
