town of See also:southern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Jaen, 16 m. W.S.W. of Jaen, by the Jaen-See also:Lucena railway. Pop. (1900), 17,078. Martos is situated on an outlying western See also:peak of the Jabalcuz mountains, which is surmounted by a ruined See also:castle and overlooks the See also:plain of See also:Andalusia. In the See also:neighbour-See also:hood are two sulphurous springs with bathing establishments. The See also:local See also:trade is almost exclusively agricultural. Martos perhaps stands on or near the site of the Tucci of See also:Ptolemy, which was fortified and renamed Colonia See also:Augusta Gemella by the See also:Romans. By See also:Ferdinand III. it was taken from the See also:Moors in 1225, and given to the knights of Calatrava; it was here that the See also:brothers See also:Carvajal, commanders of the See also:order, were in 1312 executed by command of Ferdinand IV. Before their See also:death they summoned Ferdinand to meet them within See also:thirty days at the See also:judgment-seat of See also:God.
