MOHACS , a See also:

market See also:town of See also:Hungary, in the See also:county of Baranya, 115 M. S. of See also:Budapest. Pop. (1900), 15,812. It is situated on the right See also:bank of the See also:Danube, and carries on a brisk See also:trade in See also:wine and the agricultural produce of the neighbourhood. Amongst its See also:principal buildings are an old See also:castle and the summer See also:palace of the See also:bishop of See also:Pecs. Mohacs is famous in the See also:history of Hungary by the two fateful battles which took See also:place in the See also:plain situated about 3 M. See also:south-See also:west of the town, and marked the beginning and the See also:close of the See also:Turkish dominion in Hungary. In the first (Aug. 29, 1526) the Hungarian See also:army under See also:Louis II. was annihilated by the See also:Ottoman forces led by So]iman the Magnificent. In the second (Aug. 12, 1687) the Austrians under See also:Charles of See also:Lorraine gained a decisive victory over the See also:Turks, whose See also:power was afterwards still further broken by See also:Prince See also:Eugene of See also:Savoy.
