S. of See also:Lyons on the railway to See also:Marseilles. Pop. (1906), town, 9162; See also:commune, 13,554. The See also:ancient See also:castle is now used as a See also:prison. Remains of the ramparts and four old See also:gates are also preserved. The See also:chief public institutions are the sub-prefecture, the tribunal of first instance and the communal See also:college. The See also:industries include See also:flour-milling, See also:silk-throwing and See also:spinning, and the manufacture of hats, See also:lime, farming implements, preserved foods and nougat. Montelimar was called by the See also:Romans Acunum. At a later See also:period it belonged to the See also:family of See also:Adhemar and received the name See also:Monteil d'Adhemar, whence the See also:present name. Towards the See also:middle of the 14th See also:century it was sold by them partly to the dauphins of Viennois and partly to the See also:pope, and in the next century it came into the See also:possession of the See also:Crown. During the religious See also:wars it valiantly resisted Gaspard de See also:Coligny in 1570, but was taken by the See also:Huguenots in 1587.
