It is an See also:extinct See also:volcano rising to 4365 ft. above See also:sea-level, belonging in See also:Roman times to See also:Apulia, and lying on the boundary between it and Lucania. The See also:crater is densely overgrown with oaks and beeches which See also:harbour See also:wild boars and wolves. There are two small lakes. On the See also:banks of the upper See also:lake stand the Capuchin monastery of See also:San Michele and the picturesque ruined See also:church of Sant' Ippolito. The See also:city of Rionero in Volture is pleasantly situated 27 M. by See also:rail N. of Potenza, at the See also:foot of Monte Vulture. Pop. (1901), 11,834. It does not seem to be older than the first See also:half of the 17th See also:century. In 1851 it suffered severely from an See also:earthquake.
