MOTYA , an See also:

ancient Phoenician See also:settlement in See also:Sicily, on a See also:low See also:island [mod. S. Pantaleo], 5 M. See also:north of Lilybaeum [mod. See also:Marsala]. It was the centre of the Phoenician See also:trade in Sicily. It was accessible from the mainland by a See also:mole, which is still used as a track for wagons. The See also:line of the See also:city See also:wall, of rough rectangular blocks of See also:stone without See also:mortar, may still be traced all See also:round the See also:coast, with two See also:gates, one on the north towards the mole, which is still in See also:part preserved, and one on the See also:south. The date of its See also:foundation is uncertain. In 398 B.C. it was taken after a desperate struggle (which, owing to the height and strength of the houses, continued even after a See also:breach had been made in the city wall) by See also:Dionysius of See also:Syracuse, but recovered in the next See also:year: it was, however, abandoned by the Carthaginians, and its See also:place taken by Lilybaeum on the mainland.
