city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Delaware county, See also:Indiana, U.S.A., on the See also:West See also:Fork of the See also:White See also:river, about 57 M. N.E. of See also:Indianapolis. Pop. (188o), 5210; (1890), 11,345; (19o0) 20,942, of whom 1235 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1910 See also:census) 24,005. It is served by the Central Indiana, the See also:Chicago, See also:Cincinnati & See also:Louisville, the See also:Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St See also:Louis, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis, the Fort See also:Wayne, Cincinnati & Louisville, and the See also:Lake See also:Erie & Western See also:railways, and by the Indiana See also:Union See also:Traction, the See also:Dayton & Muncie Traction, and the Muncie & See also:Portland Traction (electric inter-See also:urban) railways. The city is built on level ground (See also:altitude 950 ft.), and has an attractive residential See also:section. It is one of the See also:principal manufacturing centres in Indiana, owing largely to its situation in the natural See also:gas See also:belt. In 1900 and in 1905 it was the largest producer of See also:glass and glassware in the See also:United States, the value of its product in 1905 being $2,344,462. Muncie (named after the Munsee See also:Indians, one of the three principal divisions of the Delawares) was settled about 1833 and was chartered as a city in 1865.
