WILLIAM (1799–1860) , Scottish classical See also:scholar, was See also:born at Caldwell, See also:Ayrshire, on the 9th of See also:July 1799. He was educated at See also:Westminster School and the See also:universities of See also:Edinburgh and Bcnn. From 1846 to 1855 he represented the See also:county of See also:Renfrew in See also:parliament in the Conservative See also:interest, and was See also:lord See also:rector of See also:Glasgow University in 1847–1848. For many years he devoted his leisure to See also:Greek studies, and in 1850–1857 he published five volumes of a See also:Critical See also:History of the See also:Language and Literature of See also:Ancient See also:Greece, which, though uncompleted and somewhat antiquated, is still useful. He died in See also:London on the 1st of See also:April ,86o.
