He is generally called Prota Mateya, since as a boy of sixteen he was made a See also:priest, and a few years later became See also:archpriest (Prota) of See also:Valyevo. His See also:father, Alexa Nenadovich, Knez (See also:chief See also:magistrate) of the See also:district of Valyevo, was one of the most popular and respected public men among the Servians at the beginning of the 19th See also:century. When the four leaders of the See also:Janissaries of the See also:Belgrade Pashalic (the so-called Dahis) thought that the only way to prevent a See also:general rising of the Servians was to intimidate them by murdering all their See also:principal men, Alexa Nenadovich was one of the first victims. The-See also:NENNIUS 371 policy of the Dahis, instead of preventing, did actually and immediately provoke a general insurrection of the Servians against the See also:Turks. Prota Mateya became the See also:deputy-See also:commander of the insurgents of the Valyevo district (1804), but did not hold the See also:post for See also:long, as See also:Karageorge sent him in' 8o5 on a See also:secret See also:mission to St See also:Petersburg, and afterwards employed him almost constantly as See also:Servia's See also:diplomatic See also:envoy to See also:Russia, See also:Austria, See also:Bucharest and See also:Constantinople. After the fall of Karageorge (1813), the new See also:leader of the Servians, Milosh Obrenovich, sent Prota Mateya as representative of Servia to the See also:Congress of See also:Vienna (1814-1815), where he pleaded the Servian cause indefatigably. During that mission he often saw See also:Lord Castlereagh, and for the first See also:time the Servian See also:national interests were brought to the knowledge of See also:British statesmen. Prota Mateya's See also:memoirs are the most valuable authority for the See also:history of the first and second Servian insurrections against the Turks. The best edition of the Memoari Prote Maleve Nonodo"irh t was published by the Servian See also:Literary Association in Belgrade in 1893.
