Of the old See also:castle, called Nenagh See also:Round, dating from the See also:time of See also:King See also:John, there still exists the circular See also:donjon or keep. There are no remains of the See also:hospital founded in 1200 for See also:Austin canons, nor of the Franciscan friary, founded in the reign of See also:Henry III. and one of the richest religious houses in Ireland. The town is governed by an See also:urban See also:district See also:council. It was one of the See also:ancient manors of the Butlers, who received for it the See also:grant of a See also:fair from Henry VIII. In 1550 the town and friary were burned by O'See also:Carroll. In 1641 the town was taken by See also:Owen See also:Roe O'See also:Neill, but shortly afterwards it was recaptured by See also:Lord See also:Inchiquin. It surrendered to See also:Ireton in 1651, and was burned by See also:Sarsfield in 1688.
